Gravity thickening

The first step in sludge treatment is normally to reduce the liquid content of the sludge by a thickening process. This can be accomplished by gravity separation and the aid of coalescence or flocculation which accelerate the rate of settling. The supernatant from the thickening is often pumped back to primary treatment, while the thickened sludge is pumped downstream for further treatment.
