Digestion

After treatment for removal of undesirable wastewater constituents, waste sludge is stabilized before it is disposed outside the treatment plant. This includes biochemical degradation of large organic compunds into short-chain soluble acids as well as gases. Overall, these processes reduce the amount of volatile solids. Digestion both under aerobic and anaerobic reduces the biological activity of the sludge. Anaerobic digestion may generate heat energy while aerobic digestion give more odorless products and usable fertilizers, commonly for smaller plants.
